Silver jewelry designed + manufactured by Kyra Pelton. Hand carved and 3D printed wax pieces that were investment cast in silver.
The idea of ephemerality of silver itself was something that interested throughout my exploration of the investment casting process. The nature of jewelry is that it is one of things in the physical world that is able to be continually reformed into something new. Because the material itself holds inherent value, it stands the test of time – and the time we have with a piece is just a moment passing in its grander lifetime. I wanted to make something as an ode to the beauty in the finite, and settled on the idea of skipping stones. I wanted to emulate the passing beauty and joy as the ripples bound out from where the rock hit the water, and danced off into the horizon.

The ripple stack is meant to abstract the puddle splashes of a rock as it goes across the water - getting smaller and softer as the rock skipps into the horizon. I wanted these rings to look as though they were meant to nest together, without being explicit in how they are meant to be worn. There is a bit of space between them, as you are not ever quite sure which way your rock will turn as it skims across the water.
Skipping stones. Both the necklace and earring forms, are many little iterations of the same form, but no two are the same. The necklace is meant to reflect the rock skipping off into the distance, becoming smaller toward the horizon, just before it dives into the water. The earring set, is a little less rocklike, more wavy, organic and hoped to emulate what the rock looks like as it crashes into the lake, combining with the water, in the splashes before it disappears forever.
Sophie, my little sister, reminds me of home, bright colors, sunsets, and the ocean. “Soph” is an ear cuff to capture part of her spirit - mainly of the flowing water in which she surfs on and the funky looking patterns on her socks she always adorns. I wanted this piece to flow, but have a little bit of character, something a little funky and organic to mimic the person it was inspired by.
“Sleeping next to someone throughout the night ring” captures the states of movement between two people throughout the night. From feeling the others body close to yours, to drifting apart in slumber, to the small moments of toes, fingers, and breath colliding. Even apart, the physical space of the sheets connect you.
